Best Mac for AI in 2026: The M6 Mini Is Here
The chip name on the box is the wrong first question. For local AI on a Mac, unified memory decides which models load. Bandwidth decides how fast they generate. The software stack decides whether that model chats or actually moves files.
This is a Mac buying guide for AI, not a model leaderboard. The machines Apple announced on 2026-08-25 are no longer a pre-order. On 2026-10-05 the Mac mini shop and the Mac Studio shop are Buy pages. The chip selectors are not marked coming soon. Specs below are Apple’s. I am not quoting token-per-second numbers I did not measure. Independent benches: MacStories, 2026-09-21, cited as such.
Dottie is a free native Mac AI agent for Apple Silicon and macOS 15.4+: voice or text in, 134 system tools out. Local (MLX / Ollama), BYOK, or Pro at $20/mo. Cumulative downloads are 1,593 as of 2026-10-13 (api.dottie.ai). Latest desktop 2026.9.14. Setup: run local AI models on Mac. Runner pick: Ollama vs LM Studio. When to stay on-device: local AI vs cloud AI on Mac. Wake word versus Siri AI on macOS 27: Siri alternative for Mac.
Intel is not this path. Dottie does not install there. A chat client will.
TL;DR
| Job | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chat + small local models, always-on box | Mac mini M6 | Buy from $899 (shop, price key m6-12-12, 2026-10-05). Listed configs: 16 GB, 24 GB, and 32 GB. Take 32 GB if a 14B model is the job. |
| Daily 30B-class local work | Mac mini M5 Pro | 15-core CPU / 16-core GPU from $1,699. 18-core / 20-core GPU from $1,899. The 64 GB / 1 TB listing is the 18-core chip, so it is not the $1,699 floor. |
| Biggest on-device models | Mac Studio | Family floor $2,499 (shop JSON-LD, 2026-10-05). $5,499 is still a buy-from price on that page. 512 GB Ultra memory is still late October. |
| You already own Apple Silicon | Keep it | Dottie runs on M1 and newer, macOS 15.4+. Buy RAM only if local models are the job. |
Buy memory, then the chip
Unified memory is the GPU VRAM. There is no separate card to upgrade later.
The mini shop on 2026-10-05 lists M6 at 16 GB (256 GB or 512 GB storage), 24 GB / 512 GB, and 32 GB / 1 TB. M5 Pro listings are 24 GB / 512 GB (15-core) and 64 GB / 1 TB (18-core). I am not quoting a separate price for the 24 GB step. The chip floors are the numbers above.
The Studio shop lists an M5 Max at 36 GB / 512 GB (18-core CPU, 32-core GPU) and another at 64 GB / 1 TB (18-core CPU, 40-core GPU). The listed M5 Ultra preconfig is 96 GB / 1 TB (30-core CPU, 64-core GPU). The memory picker footer still says 512 GB for M5 Ultra is coming late October. August’s newsroom still says the Ultra goes up to a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, and 512 GB. The preconfig and the ceiling are different rows. Do not treat 96 GB as the max.
Rule of thumb already used on this site (not a new bench): plan on roughly 2× the on-disk model size free in unified memory. Comfortable bands from the local models setup:
| Unified memory | What actually fits |
|---|---|
| 16 GB | 7B-8B class. Practical floor, not the comfort zone once macOS, a browser, and an agent are loaded. |
| 24 GB | A real M6 config now, between the 16 GB floor and the 32 GB config. Still tight for a 30B. |
| 32 GB | 14B class with headroom. The config to buy if the base 16 GB is tempting. |
| 64 GB | 70B-class 4-bit, tightly. Daily local work lives here. |
| 128 GB+ | Long context, several models resident, or the models Apple’s Studio pitch is about. |
A 16 GB Air will run Dottie. Cloud / BYOK does not care how much RAM you have. Local open weights do.
What Apple actually shipped (2026-08-25), and what you can buy (2026-10-05)
Cite the newsroom for the chip, and the shop for the price you pay today.
Mac mini (newsroom, shop): Apple’s words are “always-on agentic computing.” The August post said pre-order on August 25 and availability beginning September 22. That sentence is history. The shop on 2026-10-05 is Buy from $899 for M6 (m6-12-12, amount 899.00). M5 Pro m5pro-15-16 is $1,699. M5 Pro m5pro-18-20 is $1,899. Both chips are isComingSoon: false. M6 is Apple’s first 2 nm chip: 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, Dual 16-core Neural Engine, up to 170 GB/s. Apple claims up to 4× AI performance on M6 versus the prior mini, and up to 13.5× faster LLM prompt processing on the product page. Those are Apple’s tests (July 2026), not mine.
- M5 Max: newsroom says 18-core CPU, up to 40-core GPU, up to 128 GB, up to 614 GB/s, from $2,499. The shop’s family floor is $2,499 (JSON-LD
lowPrice, 2026-10-05). The listed 36 GB configuration matters if you wanted LM Studio Splash: that post’s minimum is 36 GB (M3+, macOS 26.4+, 48 GB recommended). A 36 GB Studio is the floor they named, not the comfort config. - M5 Ultra: newsroom says up to 36-core CPU, up to 80-core GPU, up to 512 GB, 1.2 TB/s, from $5,499. $5,499 is still a buy-from price on the 2026-10-05 shop. I did not see the chip key beside it, so I am not re-proving that the Ultra base is still exactly that SKU. The same page also lists buy-from $3,099 and $6,799, unassigned here. The 512 GB memory option footer is unchanged: coming late October.
- Apple’s clustering line (Thunderbolt 5 + RDMA, up to 3× inference on four machines) stays a newsroom claim. I did not test a cluster.
Keep an M1/M2/M3/M4 Mac if it is already Apple Silicon on 15.4+. The new machines are a memory and bandwidth step, not a requirement to install the agent.
Independent numbers (not mine)
MacStories published a 256 GB M5 Ultra review on 2026-09-21. Federico Viticci compared it to an M3 Ultra with 512 GB and an RTX 5090 PC, using oMLX on macOS 27. Headline results he reports, not I:
- Generation ~70% faster than the M3 Ultra on average.
- Prompt processing up ~150% (~2.5×).
- Qwen3.8 Flash-Next: 108 tok/s write vs 70 tok/s on the M3 Ultra (16K-class card in that review).
- 256 GB holds 4-bit and 5-bit Flash-Next in RAM; 6-bit and 8-bit needed SSD offload of embedding tables.
- The 5090 still led on the 27B GGUF comparison (32 GB VRAM, ~3,000 tok/s read vs ~1,700 on the Ultra at 6K). Unified memory is why the Studio still wins the “will the model fit” test.
If you wanted a PC with a 5090, that is a different product. This page is which Mac.
The software half (or the Mac is just a heater)
Hardware without a stack is a silent box.
- Runner. Ollama 0.40.3 is GitHub Latest (published 2026-10-11). The notes do not publish Apple Silicon tok/s. 0.40.0 runs supported architectures on MLX by default on Apple Silicon. Mac path is still a DMG. Local starter gemma4:e2b. LM Studio 0.4.26 is the changelog that resolves (page date October 13, 2026, Build 5: lms compatibility with Bionic). Splash’s 36 GB line is the September post above. MLX is the Apple Silicon array path (mlx). Editor completion is separate: AI autocomplete for Mac.
- Decision. Private jobs stay on-device. Hard reasoning goes to a key you already pay. Framework: local vs cloud on Mac.
- Agent. A runner chats. Dottie calls Finder, apps, EventKit, Mail, Terminal, screen OCR. Same 134 tools on local, BYOK, or Pro. First 10 minutes: Getting Started. Why the client is free: Why I Made My Mac AI Assistant Free Forever. If the job is a wake word rather than a bigger chip, that is Siri alternative for Mac. Siri AI shipped with macOS 27 on 2026-09-14. It is not on Tahoe.
Chat-only on a Studio is an expensive ChatGPT window. Keep BoltAI if the job is one native window for many models (Essential $79 / Pro $99 / Pro+ $199, Cloud Sync 512MB / 1GB / 5GB, Team 10GB shared at $99/seat, boltai.com/pricing 2026-09-23). Use Dottie when the Mac has to change.
What I would actually buy
- Already on an M-series Mac with 16 GB+ and Sequoia 15.4+: install Dottie. Do not buy hardware to try the agent.
- First Mac, local models matter, desk is fine: Mac mini M6 from $899. The shop lists 16 GB, 24 GB, and 32 GB. 16 GB works. You will want 32 GB the first time a 14B does not load.
- Always-on homelab, 30B-class: M5 Pro. 15-core from $1,699. The 64 GB listing is the 18-core chip, which starts at $1,899 before that memory step. Setup: run local AI models on Mac.
- Biggest local agents, money is not the constraint: Studio. Floor $2,499. Order 256 GB if you are buying the Ultra this week. 512 GB is still late October. MacStories is the current independent write-up.
Laptop buyers: same memory rule. I am not quoting MacBook Pro dollar amounts I did not pull from a shop price key. Configure unified memory. Skip Intel.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Mac for AI in 2026?
Buy unified memory first. Mac mini M6 is in the Apple shop from $899 (2026-10-05), with 16 GB, 24 GB, and 32 GB configurations listed. Mac mini M5 Pro is $1,699 for the 15-core chip and $1,899 for the 18-core. Mac Studio's shop floor is $2,499. The 512 GB Ultra memory option is still late October. An M1 or later Mac you already own still runs Dottie on macOS 15.4+.
Can I buy a Mac mini M6 for local AI today?
Yes. On 2026-10-05 the Apple shop buy page for Mac mini is a Buy page, not a pre-order. M6 (12-core CPU, 12-core GPU) is buy from $899 and is not marked coming soon. M5 Pro 15-core is $1,699. M5 Pro 18-core is $1,899. August's newsroom said availability began September 22. That date has passed.
How much RAM do I need to run local AI on a Mac?
16 GB is the practical floor for 7B to 8B class models. 24 GB is a real M6 configuration now and is still tight for a 30B. 32 GB is the comfortable daily config. 64 GB is the 70B-class 4-bit band. 128 GB and up is long context or several models resident. Plan on about 2x the on-disk model size free in unified memory. Dottie cloud and BYOK paths work on any supported Mac regardless of RAM.
Is the Mac mini M6 enough for a local AI agent?
Yes for small local models plus an agent, if you configure more than 16 GB. Apple prices the M6 mini from $899 and pitches it for always-on agentic computing. M6 is a 12-core CPU / 12-core GPU chip at up to 170 GB/s. Pair it with Ollama 0.40.3 (GitHub Latest, published 2026-10-11) or MLX, then Dottie if the model should call macOS APIs. LM Studio Splash's published minimum is 36 GB, so a 16 GB mini is not that path.
Should I buy a Mac Studio M5 Ultra for local LLMs?
If the job is frontier-size open weights on-device, yes. The Studio shop floor is $2,499 as of 2026-10-05. $5,499 is still a buy-from price on that page, which matches Apple's August Ultra start, but the chip key was not next to it. The 512 GB memory option is still late October. The listed Ultra preconfig is 96 GB. MacStories (2026-09-21) ran a 256 GB unit and reported about 70 percent faster generation and about 2.5x prompt processing versus an M3 Ultra 512 GB. If you only wanted chat, a mini or the Mac you have is enough.
Can I run Dottie on an older M1 or M2 Mac?
Yes. Dottie requires Apple Silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 15.4+. Local 7B-class models are comfortable at 16 GB. You do not need M6 or M5 Ultra to install the agent. Intel Macs are not supported.
Mac mini or Mac Studio for an always-on AI server?
Mac mini if the models fit in 64 GB and you want the small chassis (M6 from $899, M5 Pro 15-core from $1,699, 18-core from $1,899). Mac Studio if you need the larger memory ceiling. The 512 GB Ultra option is late October. The Studio floor is $2,499. Software: Ollama 0.40.3 or MLX for the runner, Dottie for native Mac tools.
Do I need new hardware to use a Mac AI agent?
No. If you already have Apple Silicon and macOS 15.4+, download Dottie. Buy a new Mac when local model size is the bottleneck, not to unlock the 134 tools. Cloud and BYOK work on every supported Mac. Cumulative downloads are 1,593 as of 2026-10-13.
