Why I Made My Mac AI Assistant Free Forever
I did not make a Mac AI assistant free as a growth hack. I made it free because charging rent on the window, when the Mac already bought the silicon, is the wrong product.
Dottie is a native Mac AI agent for Apple Silicon and macOS 15.4+. Voice or text in, 134 system tools out. Cumulative downloads past 1,600 (1,623 as of 2026-10-16, api.dottie.ai). Latest desktop 2026.9.14. The app is free. Local models stay on the machine. Bring-your-own keys use APIs you already pay. Optional Dottie Pro at $20/mo is managed models, not a lock on Finder. The job split that decides whether you even need a paid chat plan is best AI app for Mac: native APIs vs Raycast 2.8 screen context vs Claude computer use (still beta). If the thing you wanted was an Alfred keyword rather than an agent, that gallery is best Alfred workflows for Mac.
This is not the product announcement (Introducing Dottie Desktop) and not the launcher swap story (I replaced Spotlight, Alfred, and Siri). This page is the pricing decision: why the agent layer on macOS is free forever, and what still costs money.
TL;DR
| Layer | What you pay | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The Mac app | $0 | The OS is the product. A paywall in front of Finder is a tax on a computer you own. |
| Local models (MLX / Ollama) | Hardware time | Apple Silicon already runs open weights. No vendor in the middle. |
| BYOK (xAI, OpenAI, Anthropic, Cerebras) | Your existing API bill | You already have the key. I am not reselling the same token. |
| Dottie Pro | $20/mo, optional | Keyless managed models. Same 134 tools either way. |
| ChatGPT Plus / Claude Pro | $20/mo each | Chat windows. Neither is a native macOS API agent. |
| BoltAI client | $79 / $99 / $199 one-time | Excellent multi-model chat client. Still not Finder. |
The Mac already paid
Apple Silicon is a local inference box that also happens to be a laptop. Ollama’s Mac app and MLX run open weights on the Neural Engine and unified memory you already own. Asking someone to pay $20/month for the client before they can talk to a model sitting in ~/ is charging twice for the same metal.
That is a Mac-specific fact. It is not true of a phone-shaped chat tab. It is not true of a Windows box that cannot run the same MLX path. Dottie requires Apple Silicon and macOS 15.4+ because that is the machine the local path is built for. Intel is a chat client or a browser. I will not pretend otherwise to grow a download number.

The OS is the product, not the transcript
ChatGPT Desktop, Claude Desktop, and the paid Mac chat clients are good at producing text. Some of them now drive a pointer (ChatGPT Work, Claude Cowork). Pointer-driven computer use is still not EventKit, Mail, or Finder as a first-class tool.
Dottie calls 134 native system tools. “Find every PDF in Downloads larger than 10MB and move them to Archives” moves the files. That job is the operating system. Putting a subscription in front of it would mean: you bought a Mac, you granted permissions, and you still rent access to your own Desktop.
Permissions stay off until you flip them. Sandbox, domain-gated network, read-only filesystem defaults. Free does not mean “all 134 tools on at launch.” It means the lock is a permission you chose, not a Stripe invoice.

What “free forever” actually covers
Three model paths. Same tools.
| Path | Cost | When |
|---|---|---|
| Local (MLX / Ollama) | $0 beyond electricity | Private, offline, nothing leaves the Mac |
| BYOK | Your provider bill | You already pay OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, or Cerebras |
| Dottie Pro ($20/mo) | Optional | Managed models, no key plumbing |
The 134 tools do not sit behind Pro. Wake word, push-to-talk (Option+Space), barge-in, and local speech do not sit behind Pro. Releases ship on GitHub. The Mac app source is public: Dottie Desktop for Mac is open source.
Pro is for people who want keyless Grok and do not want to paste an API key. Same email as desktop register after Stripe. If Pro vanished tomorrow, local and BYOK would still run the agent. That is the test for “free forever” vs “free tier.”
ChatGPT’s Free plan is real and useful. It is still a chat plan. Claude’s free tier is real and useful. It is still a chat plan. A free agent on macOS is a different object. Wider free shortlist: ChatGPT alternatives for Mac.
What I still will not give away
I am not giving away frontier tokens. If you point Dottie at Anthropic or OpenAI, you pay those labs. If you want me to hold the key, that is Pro.
I am not giving away a multi-model chat workspace with projects, forks, and a prompt library. That product already exists: BoltAI at $79 / $99 / $199 (checked 2026-09-11), one year of updates, last version kept forever. Use it. Head-to-head: BoltAI vs Dottie.
I am not giving away Super Brain over your PDF pile. That is Elephas (from $19/mo). Head-to-head: Elephas vs Dottie.
I am not replacing Spotlight for app launch, or Siri for HomeKit. Honest map: I replaced Spotlight, Alfred, and Siri.
The free thing is the Mac agent. Everything else on this list is someone else’s job, and they should charge for it.
Why not a cheap subscription on the agent itself
Because the moment the agent is metered, every “move these files” job becomes a billing event in the user’s head. People stop asking. The Mac goes back to being a chat dock plus Finder by hand.
A $20 chat plan trains you to ration words. An agent that touches the file system should be something you leave running, like Spotlight. Spotlight is free because it is how you use the computer. The agent is the same class of object once it calls system APIs.
Optional Pro exists so I can pay for managed model serving without lying that local inference is “enough” for every hard reasoning job. The split is documented: local vs cloud on Mac.
Mac-only is the constraint, not a garnish
Dottie does not run on Windows or Intel. Raycast for Windows is a real product. BoltAI lists Windows as coming soon. I am not shipping a fake port to harvest those downloads. The local path, the 134 tools, and the permission model are macOS. Cross-platform would mean a different app.
If you are on an Intel Mac, use a chat client or the vendor desktop apps. Do not wait for Dottie there.

GitHub Latest for the local runner is Ollama 0.40.5 (published 2026-10-14). The notes do not add an Apple Silicon tok/s number. MLX is still the default on Apple Silicon since 0.40.0.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dottie actually free forever on Mac?
Yes. The Mac app is free. Local models and BYOK use the same 134 system tools. Optional Dottie Pro at $20 per month is managed models, not a lock on automation. Cumulative downloads past 1,600 (1,623 as of 2026-10-16, api.dottie.ai). Latest desktop 2026.9.14. Apple Silicon and macOS 15.4+ only.
Why is a Mac AI assistant free when ChatGPT and Claude charge $20 a month?
Those products sell chat, images, and hosted computer use. Dottie sells none of that as the core. The core is native macOS control on a machine you already own. You can still pay ChatGPT or Claude for thinking, and point Dottie at the same APIs with your own key.
What does Dottie Pro pay for if the app is free?
Keyless managed models. Same tools, no API key to paste. Local and BYOK keep working if you never subscribe. Pro is not required for wake word, permissions, or Finder, Mail, calendar, and Terminal.
Can I run a Mac AI agent with no subscription and no API key?
Yes. Install Dottie, pick a local model via MLX or Ollama, grant one permission, run one task. Ollama's preferred Mac install is the DMG app (macOS 14+). That path never leaves the machine.
Why Mac-only? Why not Windows?
The local stack and the 134 tools are macOS and Apple Silicon. A Windows build would be a different product. Raycast already ships on Windows. BoltAI lists Windows as coming soon. Dottie stays Mac-true rather than shipping a thin port.
How is this different from BoltAI's one-time license?
BoltAI is a pay-once multi-model chat client (Essential $79, Pro $99, Pro+ $199 as of 2026-09-11). It is the right buy if the job is one native window for many models. It is not a system agent. Dottie is free because the job is the OS, not the transcript.
Will the free Mac agent stay free?
The app, local path, BYOK path, and 134 tools stay free. That is the product. Pro stays optional for managed models. I will not move Finder control behind a paywall. If a specific cloud model costs money, that bill stays with the provider or with Pro, never with a lock on the agent.
