10 Things You Didn't Know Your Mac Could Do with AI (2026)

Last updated on

This is not a prompt catalog. That list is 50 things to ask Dottie on your Mac. This page is ten Mac AI capabilities people miss: some Apple already shipped on Tahoe, Siri AI shipped with macOS 27 on 2026-09-14, and some need a native agent.

Dottie is a free native Mac AI agent (Apple Silicon, macOS 15.4+): voice or text in, 134 tools out. Cumulative downloads past 1,100 (1,173 as of 2026-09-06, api.dottie.ai). Keep Siri for HomeKit and calls. Use an agent when the Mac itself has to move.

TL;DR

#Already on Tahoe today
1Shortcuts Use Model: On-Device, PCC, or ChatGPT
2A local LLM with no API key (Ollama / MLX)
3Writing Tools in every text field
4Voice Control is dictation, not an agent
5Raycast 2.0 AI Chat is Pro + Tahoe
6Local for private jobs, cloud for hard ones

macOS 27 Golden Gate (public 2026-09-14, not Tahoe): Siri AI in Spotlight, Visual Intelligence (Shift–Command–Space), Siri app. Apple Support. No open tool list in that note.

On Tahoe today

1. Shortcuts already has an LLM action

Use Model is on macOS Tahoe 26. Three targets:

  • On-Device: Apple Intelligence on the Mac. No network.
  • Private Cloud Compute: Apple’s servers. Off-device, even when Apple markets it as private.
  • ChatGPT: the extension. Leaves Apple.

Most roundups still say Shortcuts has no AI. That cell is false on Tahoe. What Use Model does not do: open-ended Finder work, a wake word, or a model you picked from Hugging Face. Full how-to, including Follow Up and Tahoe personal automations: Apple Intelligence Shortcuts on Mac. For the automation split, see automate your Mac with AI.

2. You can run a local LLM with no API key

Ollama for macOS is a DMG. ollama run gemma4 after that. MLX is the Apple Silicon path. Unified memory is the GPU. 16 GB is the comfortable 7B–14B band. Setup: run local AI models on Mac. Runner pick: Ollama vs LM Studio. Buying the machine: best Mac for AI in 2026.

Nothing in that stack moves a file unless something calls tools. A runner is not an agent.

3. Writing Tools already live in every text field

Apple Intelligence on Sequoia and Tahoe rewrites, proofreads, and summarizes in the field you are in. Zero download. That is the job Siri-class features still win. It is not “organize Downloads.” Head-to-head: Apple Intelligence vs Dottie. Wider list: Apple Intelligence alternatives for Mac.

4. Voice Control is dictation. A wake-word agent is not.

macOS Voice Control types what you say. It does not plan a multi-step Finder job. “Hey Siri” is a closed command set. “Hey Dottie” is a wake word wired to tools (Option+Space is push-to-talk). Modes: control your Mac with voice. Dictation apps that only type: best AI dictation apps for Mac. Siri vs agent: Siri alternative for Mac.

5. Raycast 2.0 put Dictation and AI Chat on Pro, and needs Tahoe

Raycast 2.0 GA 2026-08-25. Download is v2.1.2.0 for macOS Tahoe and Apple Silicon. Dictation and AI Chat are Pro now. Sequoia keeps v1. A launcher with AI is still a launcher. Agent split: Raycast AI vs Dottie. Field: Raycast alternatives.

6. You can route private jobs local and hard jobs to the cloud

On Apple Silicon this is a daily decision, not a manifesto. Client files and folder names stay on the Mac. Frontier reasoning and million-token context go to a key you already pay for. Framework: local AI vs cloud AI on Mac. Dottie speaks both paths plus Pro at $20/month. The 134 tools are the same on every path.

On macOS 27 (Golden Gate, public 2026-09-14)

Siri AI shipped with macOS 27 on 2026-09-14. Apple’s support note that day: turn it on in Settings. It is in Spotlight, uses personal context, acts across apps by asking, and keeps conversations in a Siri app synced with iCloud. Visual Intelligence uses Shift–Command–Space. Ars Technica the same day: Golden Gate requires an M-series Mac, and app interaction needs developer support. Do not treat this as Tahoe. The June announcement is the feature list. The September note is the ship.

7. Siri AI lives in Spotlight on Mac

On iPad and Mac, Siri AI is integrated into Spotlight. Type a question, keep talking in a dedicated Siri app, sync history over iCloud. Personal context (Mail, Messages, Photos) and web answers are the pitch. App actions Apple names: draft an email, edit and share photos. That is Apple’s toolbox, not yours.

8. Visual Intelligence has a Mac keyboard shortcut

First time on Mac: select something on the display and type to Siri. iPad gets it in the screenshot flow. Same newsroom. Useful for “what is this on my screen.” Not “move every PDF in Downloads.”

9. Control-click a file or image and Ask Siri

Systemwide context menus gain Ask Siri for images, files, or text. Same announcement. A menu item is not an agent loop.

What Siri AI still does not do on a Mac: third-party models, a local Ollama path, open-ended Finder / EventKit / Terminal tools you add yourself. Advanced on-device extras (expressive voices, upgraded dictation) need M3 or later with 12 GB unified memory, per Apple’s footnote. M1/M2 Macs get the OS, not that on-device tier.

The February “delayed into late 2026” line is stale. The remaining gap is the same one this site has measured for months: chat Siri vs a native macOS agent. Comparison: Siri vs Dottie.

Cloud agents that are not the Mac

10. ChatGPT Work and Claude Cowork can run with the laptop closed

ChatGPT Work (July 2026; agent mode is gone) clicks, types, and moves files. Claude Cowork is a sandbox over documents. Copilot Cowork is Microsoft 365 cloud (GA 2026-06-16). Microsoft’s own page says the laptop can stay closed.

That is the opposite of Finder. Keep those for Office / long docs. Use a native agent for the Desktop pile. Splits: Dottie vs ChatGPT, Claude Cowork vs Dottie, Copilot alternatives for Mac.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can my Mac do with AI that I probably skipped?

On Tahoe: Shortcuts Use Model (On-Device, Private Cloud Compute, or ChatGPT), Apple Intelligence Writing Tools, and a local LLM via Ollama or MLX. A native agent adds wake-word control of Finder, Mail, calendar, and Terminal. Siri AI shipped with macOS 27 on 2026-09-14. It is not on Tahoe.

Is Siri AI on Mac available today?

Yes on macOS 27 Golden Gate, which Apple's support page dates to 2026-09-14. Turn it on in Settings. It is not a Tahoe feature. Tahoe keeps the older Siri plus Writing Tools and Shortcuts Use Model. The support note does not add a third-party model picker or an open tool list.

Does Shortcuts Use Model replace a Mac AI agent?

No. Use Model runs an LLM inside a shortcut you already built. An agent picks tools from a spoken or typed job you did not pre-wire. Keep Shortcuts for repeatable flows. Use an agent for one-off Finder, Mail, and app work.

Can I run AI on a Mac with no API key and no subscription?

Yes. Ollama and MLX run open weights on Apple Silicon. Apple Intelligence Writing Tools and on-device Use Model need no key. Dottie is free; local and BYOK use the same 134 tools. Optional Dottie Pro at $20 per month is managed models, not a lock on automation.

Is ChatGPT Work the same as controlling macOS?

No. Work is computer use: pointer, typing, files, allowlisted apps. Claude Cowork and Copilot Cowork are cloud document agents. A native Mac agent calls Finder, EventKit, Mail, and Terminal as APIs. The laptop-closed pitch is the giveaway that the work is not on your Desktop.

Do Hey Siri and Hey Dottie fight?

No. Different wake words. Keep Siri for HomeKit, calls, and Apple-only surfaces. Use Dottie for open-ended Mac automation and local models. Siri AI does not change that split.

What Mac do I need?

Apple Intelligence needs Apple Silicon. Dottie needs Apple Silicon and macOS 15.4+. Ollama runs on Apple Silicon comfortably at 16 GB. Siri AI's most advanced on-device extras need M3 or later with 12 GB, per Apple. Intel Macs are not this path.
