AI Autocomplete for Mac: Xcode 27 Needs Apple Silicon

Last updated on

AI autocomplete on a Mac means the editor offers the next line while you type. It does not mean Microsoft Copilot, the chat app. It does not mean a voice agent that moves files. If the search was “copilot” and you wanted Office or a Mac assistant, that page is Microsoft Copilot alternatives for Mac. This page is the editor.

Three tools cover the query. Xcode 27 installs only on Apple Silicon. GitHub Copilot completes inside Xcode, and the plans table now lists agent mode in Xcode. Cursor is its own editor. Ranked assistants, including coding, live in 10 best AI assistants for Mac.

Dottie is not in the autocomplete column. It is a Mac AI agent for Apple Silicon and macOS 15.4+: you ask, it calls 134 system tools. Cumulative downloads are 1,543 as of 2026-10-06 (api.dottie.ai). Latest desktop 2026.9.14. It will edit a file or run Terminal when you ask. It will not ghost-text the next function as you type.

Xcode 27: Apple Silicon only

Apple’s Xcode marketing page (checked 2026-10-06) no longer describes predictive code completion. It leads with Xcode 27 coding agents “powered by the model of your choice,” including frontier models from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, any agent that speaks the Agent Client Protocol, and Model Context Protocol skills. That is an IDE agent. It is not Finder.

The install line is in the Xcode 27 release notes: Xcode 27 will only install and run on Apple silicon Macs. It requires macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later. It includes Swift 6.4 and the macOS 27 SDK. The same notes say the macOS 27 SDK can still back-deploy Universal (Intel and Apple Silicon) apps to macOS 12 and later. The IDE itself does not install on Intel.

On-device completion is the older line. Xcode 26 release notes say predictive code completion “uses more context from your code, all running locally,” and that you can download and run a local model on Macs with Apple silicon. Xcode 26 requires macOS Sequoia 15.6 or later. Those notes also say coding intelligence features require Apple Intelligence. I am not repeating a “turn it on before launch” workaround. That sentence is not in the notes I re-read on 2026-10-06.

Setting up coding intelligence (same day) is where a local endpoint goes: Intelligence settings, add a chat provider, choose Locally Hosted, enter a port. The provider has to speak the Chat Completions API. Claude and ChatGPT accounts are the built-in switches.

Wins: Xcode 27 is the native Mac IDE, and the 26-era Swift completion still runs on the machine.

Loses: Xcode 27 is Apple Silicon only. The sweet spot for the on-device model is still Swift and Apple frameworks. Other languages are why people add Copilot or switch editors. Which Mac to run local models on, outside Xcode: best Mac for AI in 2026.

GitHub Copilot: agent mode includes Xcode

GitHub Copilot plans (checked 2026-10-06) still list Xcode next to VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim, Zed, Eclipse, and now Raycast. The extension repo is Copilot for Xcode. Its latest GitHub release is still 0.51.0 (2026-08-12). The plans table moved. The extension tag did not.

Individual prices on that page are unchanged:

PlanPriceInline suggestions
Free$02,000 / month
Pro$10 / user / monthUnlimited
Pro+$39 / user / monthUnlimited
Max$100 / user / monthUnlimited

The same table lists agent mode in Xcode (with VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, and Eclipse) on every plan, including Free. Paid plans say code completions and next-edit suggestions do not draw GitHub AI Credits. I am not quoting a Free chat cap. The plans card says “limited” chat and agent usage. An FAQ on the same site still says 50 chat requests. Those two lines disagree, so the card is the source for completions and the chat number stays out.

This is not Microsoft 365 Copilot. That product chats and runs Cowork against Office in the cloud. Head-to-head with a Mac agent: Copilot alternatives for Mac. The Raycast row on the plans page is the launcher, not a new Mac agent. Current Mac download filename is v2.6.3.0 (arm64 DMG, Content-Length 135,188,355, raycast.com/download, 2026-10-06). The published changelog is still v2.6 dated October 5, 2026. There is no 2.6.3 notes page.

Wins: one subscription across Xcode and the other editors, and agent mode is now named for Xcode.

Loses: Free completions stop at 2,000 a month. The model call leaves the Mac unless you point Xcode at a locally hosted provider.

Cursor: Pro is still $20

Cursor pricing (checked 2026-10-06) still offers Hobby at $0. The page’s offer data lists Pro at $20, Pro+ at $60, and Ultra at $200. Teams is $40 per user per month. I am not quoting a yearly discount. The old “saves 20%” line is not on the page.

The Pro card, which is the one the page shows at $20, now names extended Agent limits, generous limits for Grok, frontier models, Grok Bot, MCPs, skills, and hooks, cloud agents, and Bugbot on usage-based billing. The FAQ recommends Pro+ for daily agent users and Ultra for power users. It does not print those two prices in the visible cards, so the offer data above is the source.

Cursor is a desktop editor you install, not a plugin inside Xcode. If the codebase has to stay in Xcode, Copilot or Xcode’s own model fits better. If you want the model to be the editor, Cursor is the one built that way.

Wins: Hobby is $0. Pro is still a flat $20.

Loses: second editor. It does not replace Xcode’s Interface Builder, Simulator, or Instruments. Privacy mode is a setting (“code data is not used for training” when it is on). I am not claiming it defaults on.

What autocomplete will not do

A completion model does not file a PDF, send Mail, or change a setting. That split:

  1. Inline autocomplete types the next code. Xcode predictive completion, GitHub Copilot inline suggestions, Cursor.
  2. A coding agent inside the IDE edits a wider diff. Xcode 27’s coding agents, Copilot agent mode in Xcode, Cursor Agent. Still the repo.
  3. A Mac agent calls system APIs. Dottie. Product definition: What Is Dottie Desktop. Agent vs assistant: which Mac AI agents actually run tasks.

Local weights for the rest of the Mac, not the Xcode model: Ollama vs LM Studio on Apple Silicon. Ollama’s latest stable is 0.35.1 (release, 2026-09-29). That release adds Clef decision models and tells clients not to offer them for general chat, tools, or thinking. It also updates the MLX engine. No tokens-per-second figure is in the notes. The newest LM Studio changelog URL that returns 200 is 0.4.25. 0.4.26 returns 404 (both checked 2026-10-06). Point an editor at that runtime when you want the completion to stay off a vendor account. Hardware: best Mac for AI.

You can run both. Copilot or Xcode while you are in a Swift file. Dottie when the sentence is “open the repo, run the tests, and put the log on the Desktop.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AI autocomplete for Mac in 2026?

For Swift on a Mac, start with Xcode. Xcode 27 only installs on Apple Silicon and needs macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later. Xcode 26 release notes still say predictive completion runs locally. Add GitHub Copilot Pro at $10 a month when you want the same completion inside Xcode, with unlimited completions and agent mode in Xcode. Use Cursor Pro at $20 a month when you want the editor itself built around the model. None of those move files in Finder.

Does Xcode 27 run on an Intel Mac?

No. The Xcode 27 release notes say Xcode 27 will only install and run on Apple silicon Macs, and that it requires macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later. The macOS 27 SDK can still build Universal apps that run on Intel Macs back to macOS 12. The IDE does not install on Intel.

Does Xcode have AI autocomplete on Apple Silicon?

Yes. Xcode 26 release notes say predictive code completion runs locally and that you can run a local model on Macs with Apple silicon. Xcode 26 requires macOS Sequoia 15.6 or later. Xcode 27 is the current IDE and is Apple Silicon only. Apple's Xcode marketing page, checked 2026-10-06, talks about coding agents and a model of your choice. It does not repeat the predictive-completion paragraph.

Does GitHub Copilot work in Xcode on a Mac?

Yes. GitHub's Copilot plans page lists Xcode as a supported editor, and agent mode in Xcode is included on Free, Pro, Pro+, and Max. The extension is Copilot for Xcode. Its latest release tag is still 0.51.0 from 2026-08-12. Free includes 2,000 inline suggestions a month. Pro is $10 per user per month and includes unlimited code completion. That product is GitHub Copilot, not the Microsoft 365 Copilot chat app.

How much does GitHub Copilot cost for an individual?

On the GitHub Copilot plans page checked 2026-10-06, Free is $0 with 2,000 inline suggestions a month, Pro is $10 per user per month, Pro+ is $39, and Max is $100. Paid plans say completions and next-edit suggestions do not consume GitHub AI Credits. Chat and agent use do.

How much is Cursor?

On cursor.com/pricing checked 2026-10-06, Hobby is free. Offer data on that page lists Pro at $20 a month, Pro+ at $60, and Ultra at $200. Teams is $40 per user per month. The Pro card names Grok limits, Grok Bot, MCP, and Bugbot. The page does not print a yearly percent-off.

Is AI autocomplete the same as Microsoft Copilot on Mac?

No. AI autocomplete on Mac is inline code completion in an editor: Xcode, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor. Microsoft Copilot is a chat app with Microsoft 365 Cowork. Dottie is a Mac agent that calls system tools. Searching copilot alternative mac is the chat product. Searching ai autocomplete mac is the editor.

Can a Mac AI agent replace code autocomplete?

No. Dottie can run Terminal and edit files when you ask. It does not insert the next line as you type in Xcode. Keep Xcode or GitHub Copilot for that. Use the agent when the job is the Mac outside the editor: files, Mail, calendar, settings. Dottie requires Apple Silicon and macOS 15.4 or later. Cumulative downloads are 1,543 as of 2026-10-06.
