I Replaced Spotlight, Alfred, and Siri with One Mac App

I did not set out to collect Mac utilities. I set out to stop paying rent on three of them.

Spotlight launches apps. Alfred (with a Powerpack license from £34) runs workflows I had to build and then keep alive. Siri plus Apple Intelligence answers and does a closed set of Apple actions. None of them finish a multi-step Finder job from a sentence.

So I built Dottie: a free native Mac AI agent. Voice or text in, 134 system tools out. Apple Silicon and macOS 15.4+ only. Cumulative downloads are past 1,000 (api.dottie.ai, 2026-08-19).

This is not a claim that those three apps vanished from macOS. It is the honest map of what I stopped using them for.

What I was actually paying for

Three products, three jobs, one Mac.

Spotlight is free and already there. Cmd+Space, type three letters, open Slack. That loop is unbeaten. I still use it twenty times a day. Anyone who says they “replaced Spotlight” and still launches apps from a search bar is lying about the verb.

Alfred earned its keep when I had Powerpack workflows: clipboard history, snippets, a few file actions. The shop is £34 for a single-user Powerpack Mega Supporter or £59 for Mega Supporter. The tax is not the price. The tax is rebuilding a workflow when an app path changes. If you want the closest modern launcher instead, that is Raycast (free tier; Pro from $8/month). Siri is the voice I already had and almost never used for real Mac work. Apple Intelligence made the language better. The action surface is still whatever Apple shipped. The bigger personal-context and app-action upgrades have been delayed into late 2026. Head-to-head: Siri alternative for Mac.

The hole in the middle is the job none of them own: after I finish speaking, is anything different on this Mac that I did not click? That test is the AI agent for Mac definition. Spotlight finds. Alfred triggers a workflow I wrote. Siri answers or runs a predefined action. An agent picks tools.

What actually got replaced

These are jobs I used to do with a launcher, a workflow, or a Siri attempt. Now they are one sentence.

Files

  • “Move all screenshots from today into a Desktop folder called Inbox”
  • “Find PDFs I downloaded this week larger than 10MB”
  • “Rename this file to quarterly-report-final”

Spotlight can find the PDF. It will not sort Downloads by type. Alfred will, after I build the workflow. Dottie calls Finder APIs.

Calendar and Mail

  • “What’s on my calendar today?”
  • “Create a 3pm event called Design review”
  • “Draft an email to Alex saying I will be late”

Siri can create a simple event. It does not chain “read the calendar, then draft the apology” as one agent turn. Dottie does, if Calendar and Mail are enabled.

Apps and system

  • “Open Safari and go to GitHub”
  • “How much free disk space do I have?”
  • “What’s using the most CPU right now?”

Spotlight opens Safari faster than any agent. I still use Spotlight for that. I use Dottie when the next clause is “and then…”.

Voice that acts

Hold Option+Space (configurable), speak, release. Or say Hey Dottie. Or use the mic in the chat window. Push-to-talk can type at the cursor in any app, or turn the utterance into a tool call. Modes: control your Mac with voice.

Siri’s wake word and Dottie’s wake word do not fight. I left Hey Siri on for lights and timers.

What I did not replace

Honesty is the only version of this post that is useful.

I still use Spotlight for app launch, calculator, and “open the file whose name I already know.” An agent is slower than Cmd+Space + three letters. That is fine. They are different jobs.

I did not need Alfred for launch. I needed it for clipboard history and a handful of workflows. Clipboard is a launcher job. Dottie is not a clipboard manager. If that is why you pay Powerpack, switch to Raycast or keep Alfred. Do not come to an agent for snippets.

I still use Siri for HomeKit, timers, calls, and Apple Watch. Dottie has no HomeKit path and is not a telephony front end. Apple Intelligence Writing Tools in every text field stay Apple-only.

I did not delete Raycast if I wanted a hotkey bar. Some days the bar is the right UI. Launcher vs agent: Raycast AI vs Dottie.

If your Mac life is “hit a hotkey, type a keyword, run a saved workflow,” you want a launcher. If your Mac life is “say the outcome, let the machine pick tools,” you want an agent. Most people run both. That is the hybrid in Alfred alternatives, not a failure of either product.

A week of replacements, not a demo reel

I am not going to invent a cute diary. These are the sentences that retired a click-path on my Mac.

Each one is a single permission category. Files, Calendar, Mail, or Apps. Do not enable everything on day one. The security model is deny-by-default on purpose.

What this is not

It is not a Spotlight clone. It is not an Alfred workflow editor. It is not a Siri skin.

It will not run on Intel. It will not replace HomeKit. It will not beat Cmd+Space at launching Slack.

Can Dottie replace Spotlight on a Mac?

No for app launch. Spotlight is still faster at Cmd+Space and three letters. Dottie replaces the jobs after launch: multi-step Finder work, calendar and Mail, and voice that runs tools. Keep both.

Can Dottie replace Alfred on a Mac?

Only if your Alfred use was 'do this multi-step thing on my Mac' and you are tired of maintaining workflows. Dottie is not a clipboard manager or snippet engine. For a modern launcher, use Raycast. For Powerpack workflows you already love, keep Alfred.

Can Dottie replace Siri on a Mac?

No as a full replacement. Dottie wins at open-ended Mac automation, model choice, and a fully local path. Siri stays for HomeKit, calls, Apple Watch, timers, and system-wide Writing Tools. Hey Siri and Hey Dottie can run together.

Is Dottie a Spotlight or Alfred alternative?

What Mac do I need?

Yes. Local and BYOK need no Dottie account. Optional Dottie Pro is $20 per month for managed models and does not unlock the 134 tools. Alfred Powerpack is still a paid license (£34 or £59 on alfredapp.com/shop as of 2026-08-19).

How do I try this without throwing away Spotlight and Siri?
