Best AI Dictation Apps for Mac (2026): Type or Control
Dictation on a Mac is a typing job. You speak, text lands at the cursor in Notes, Slack, or Cursor. That is useful. It is not “move today’s screenshots into a folder.”
This page is the Mac dictation shortlist: Apple Dictation, Superwhisper, Wispr Flow, and MacWhisper. Then the next step: a native Mac AI agent that can type or call 134 system tools. Modes for that half: control your Mac with voice.
Dottie is that agent. Apple Silicon, macOS 15.4+. Cumulative downloads 1,509 (api.dottie.ai, 2026-10-03). Latest desktop 2026.9.14. Category ranking: best AI assistants for Mac. Workflow keywords, which are a different job again: best Alfred workflows for Mac.
TL;DR
| If the job is | Use |
|---|---|
| Occasional typing, zero install | Apple Dictation (built into macOS) |
| Live dictation, offline on the Mac | Superwhisper |
| Cross-device cloud dictation | Wispr Flow |
| Transcribe a recording or video file | MacWhisper |
| Speak a Mac task that should actually run | Dottie |
Apple Dictation: free, already on the Mac
Apple’s own guide (re-read 2026-10-03, macOS 27 / Tahoe / Sequoia): speak wherever you can type. Microphone key, a keyboard shortcut, or Edit → Start Dictation. On a Mac with Apple silicon you can keep using the keyboard while you talk. There is no length timeout. Dictation stops when no speech is detected for 30 seconds, or when you press Escape, the Microphone key, or the shortcut.
Keyboard settings show whether voice inputs and transcripts for general text Dictation (messages and notes, not a search box) are processed on your device and not sent to Siri servers. That note is the privacy fact. Voice Control is a different product: when it is on, it takes over dictation and adds commands. Standard Dictation is then unavailable.
Wins: $0, no download, good enough for short replies.
Loses: no custom models, no file transcription suite, no agent tools. Auto-punctuation exists in supported languages. It still types.
Superwhisper: live dictation, offline first
Superwhisper is a native dictation app. The SoftwareApplication JSON-LD (2026-10-03) names macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android, “offline and cloud transcription,” and 100+ languages. The homepage still says press Option+Space and dictate into the focused app. Same chord as Dottie’s default, so remap one of them if you run both.
JSON-LD lists two offers: Free at $0 and Pro Monthly at $8 (USD). A Lifetime billing toggle is on the page (“Top choice”). I am not quoting a lifetime dollar amount the live markup did not expose. Their FAQ on the same page: you can try Pro features for 3,000 words, then the free tier stays. A second FAQ answer: Intel Macs work best with cloud models. Offline models only run really well on Apple Silicon. That is the hardware split. Features the homepage names: custom modes, vocabulary, file transcription, meeting notes, Super Mode (screen-aware).
Wins: local path on Apple Silicon, live cursor insertion, modes.
Loses: still dictation. It will not call Finder APIs. If you wanted pay-once multi-model chat instead of voice typing, that is BoltAI vs Dottie, a different job.
Wispr Flow: cloud dictation across devices
Wispr Flow pricing (checked 2026-10-03):
| Plan | Price | Dictation cap |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 2,000 words/week on desktop, 1,000/week on mobile |
| Pro | $15/user/mo, or $12/user/mo billed annually | Unlimited |
| Growth | $23/user/mo on the monthly table, $18 on the annual table | Unlimited + admin |
The September line “unlimited on Android, 1,000 on iPhone” is gone. The word-limit row now says desktop versus mobile. The Growth cells also print $33 (monthly view) and $26 (annual view) beside $23 and $18. I am not collapsing those into one Growth price. Enterprise is listed as Custom. Dictation runs on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. The pricing page no longer says Notetaker is Mac-only. Free includes limited Notetaker. Students and educators get 50% off Pro. SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 are on the security row. A signed BAA is listed under Growth (“org-wide HIPAA enforcement”), not under Free. There is still no offline story on that page. It is a cloud product.
Wins: polish, snippets, dictionary, phone + desktop.
Loses: weekly cap on Free; no offline story on the pricing page; still types. Raycast 2.0 put dictation on Pro. The current Mac download filename is v2.6.2.0 (arm64 DMG, raycast.com/download, 2026-10-03). The published changelog is still v2.6, dated October 2, 2026. That page does not say the Pro gate moved. Field: Raycast alternatives. Free chat apps, a different job: ChatGPT alternatives for Mac.
MacWhisper: files first, dictation second
MacWhisper is Jordi Bruin’s Mac app for on-device Whisper / Parakeet transcription of audio and video files. The homepage (2026-10-03) prints MacWhisper Free at €0 and MacWhisper Pro pay once at €64 per license, with lifetime updates. Licenses go through Gumroad or the App Store. The September Gumroad schema at $0 was the free listing, not the Pro price.
Wins: batch files, subtitles, local models, Mac-only.
Loses: live cursor-first dictation is not the centre of gravity. If the recording already exists, start here. If you are talking into Mail, start with Superwhisper or Apple Dictation.
The spectrum on a Mac
Three different products share the word “voice”:
- Dictation types. Apple, Superwhisper, Wispr Flow, MacWhisper (files).
- Voice Control (macOS accessibility) runs a closed command set and takes over dictation while it is on.
- A Mac agent turns the same utterance into tools: files, EventKit, Mail, Terminal, screen. That is Dottie. How-to: voice control guide. Catalog: 50 things to ask Dottie on your Mac. Automation split: automate your Mac with AI. Keyword graphs, not voice: Alfred workflows for Mac.
Siri is a fourth closed set. Keep it for HomeKit, timers, and calls. Head-to-head: Siri vs Dottie.
You can run a dictation app and an agent. They do not replace each other. Superwhisper / Wispr Flow for prose. Dottie for “do this on the Mac.”
Dottie: when the voice should change the Mac
Three ways to speak:
| Mode | How | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Push-to-talk | Hold Option+Space, speak, release | Words at the cursor, or a tool call |
| Chat mic | Mic in the Dottie window | A full agent turn with the tools you enabled |
| Wake word | Hey Dottie | Overlay, live transcription, hands-free |
Model paths are the same as the rest of the app: local (MLX / Ollama, audio can stay on the Mac), BYOK, or Dottie Pro at $20/month. The 134 tools are not paywalled. First 10 minutes: Getting Started with Dottie on Mac. Why the agent is free: Why I Made My Mac AI Assistant Free Forever.
Requirements stay strict: Apple Silicon and macOS 15.4+. Intel is a dictation app or a chat client, not this agent.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best AI dictation app for Mac in 2026?
Apple Dictation if you want free and built-in. Superwhisper if you want live dictation with an offline path on Apple Silicon (Free $0, Pro Monthly $8 on superwhisper.com JSON-LD, 2026-10-03). Wispr Flow if you want the same habit on Mac plus a phone (Free 2,000 words/week on desktop and 1,000/week on mobile; Pro $15/mo or $12/mo annual). MacWhisper if the job is transcribing files on-device (Pro €64 once). None of those run Finder tasks. That is Dottie.
Is Apple Dictation good enough on a Mac?
Yes for short replies. Apple's guide, re-read 2026-10-03: speak anywhere you can type, no length timeout, stops when no speech is detected for 30 seconds. On Apple silicon you can type while you dictate. Keyboard settings show whether general text Dictation (messages and notes, not a search box) stays on the device. It still only types.
Does Superwhisper work offline on Mac?
On Apple Silicon, yes. Superwhisper's JSON-LD says offline and cloud transcription. Their FAQ says offline models only run really well on Apple Silicon, and Intel Macs work best with cloud models. Option+Space is still the homepage shortcut. That is local dictation, not a Mac agent.
How much does Wispr Flow cost on Mac?
Free is $0 with 2,000 words per week on desktop and 1,000 per week on mobile. The old unlimited-Android cap is gone. Pro is $15 per user per month, or $12 per month billed annually. The Growth row shows $23 monthly and $18 annual, and the same cells also print $33 and $26. Students get 50% off Pro. Checked on wisprflow.ai/pricing, 2026-10-03.
Is MacWhisper a dictation app or a transcription app?
Transcription first. It runs Whisper and Parakeet on the Mac for audio and video files. The homepage lists Free at €0 and Pro pay once at €64 per license with lifetime updates (macwhisper.com, 2026-10-03). Use it for recordings. Use Superwhisper or Apple Dictation for live typing.
Can dictation apps control my Mac, or only type?
They type. Voice Control (accessibility) adds a closed command set and replaces standard Dictation while it is on. A native agent (Dottie) can type at the cursor or call 134 system tools. Same voice, different product.
What Mac do I need for Dottie voice control?
Apple Silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 15.4 or newer. Intel Macs are not supported. First launch downloads on-device models for speech and local chat (about 2 GB). Dictation apps above have their own requirements; Apple Dictation ships with macOS.
Does Superwhisper's offline mode need Apple Silicon?
Their own FAQ says yes for the good path. Offline models only run really well on Apple Silicon. Intel Macs work best with cloud models. Pro Monthly is still $8 in the homepage JSON-LD, and the Pro trial they name is 3,000 words. Checked 2026-10-03.
